After hard and long consideration of all the economic factors involved, the members of CHICC have determined that putting on a first class chainsaw carving competition in Westport this September is not possible. The major funding source for the contest has always been vendor booth rentals. Last September, there were 20 businesses on the grounds. This year, only eight have reserved spaces. Additionally, major corporate sponsors, as well as local businesses and community members, are understandably making major cuts in their spending for sponsorships of and/or donations to events like this one. And, of course, we all know the effect the current high prices for gas are having on potential visitors travel plans.
